Vodacom as part of its commitment to democratising access to the Internet has introduced four new best value for money devices to its own branded range of Smart devices at its head office in Midrand today.

In adding the latest range of high quality smart devices both for 3G and 4G networks, Vodacom plans to make it more affordable for anyone to get connected to the Internet with best value for money power packed smartphones and tablets. Vodacom branded cellphones made the top 10 list in the 2015 Sunday Times Top brands award.

Vodacom Chief Commercial Officer, Godfrey Motsa says: “Historically, we sold more non-smartphones; now Smart devices have surpassed non-smartphones as best sellers. We have approximately 12 million active smartphones on our network up from 9 million a year ago. The average amount of data used per smartphone in South Africa increased 24.8% to 408 MB per month. The contributors to the uptake of smart devices and increasing data consumption are more affordable smart devices, wider coverage and our integrated plans which offer data bundles at competitive prices, enabling more and more people to connect to the Internet.”

He says: “Equipment revenue grew by 13.8%, as a result of the increase in smart device sales (smartphones, tablets and modems). Smart devices accounted for 58.0% of equipment sold. This is in line with our strategy of putting smart data capable devices into the hands of more customers.”

Speaking on the devices, Vodacom’s Managing Executive for Terminals, Davide Tacchino said: “Since August 2014, we sold over 2.1 million Vodacom branded handsets and tablets. It’s no secret South Africans are data hungry and there is an increasing need for smart devices. I’m confident that our own branded smart range partnered with our propositions and world-class network is well positioned to provide the best mobile experience to customers.”

Tacchino also added that the branded range of devices has been extended to compete in all categories not only the entry level smartphone and tablet category.
